Im Folgenden möchte ich mich und das geplante St. Nikolaushaus vorstellen.
Mein Name ist Stefanie Köster. Ich bin Sozialpädagogin und lebe zurzeit in Essen. Von Juli 1999 bis November 2007 war ich im Bistum Bukoba, Tansania. Dort habe ich gemeinsam mit einer Ordensschwester eine Missionsstation aufgebaut.
Während meiner Zeit in Tansania habe ich immer wieder vernachlässigte und behinderte Kinder kennengelernt und musste feststellen, dass
... es für diese Kinder kaum Zufluchtsorte im Land gibt.
Mehrere Kinder musste ich in einem nahe gelegenen Krankenhaus unterbringen, weil ich keinen anderen Ort für sie finden konnte. Magdalena, Anthony und Joseph wurden nach ihrer Geburt ausgesetzt und leben seitdem im Krankenhaus.
Inzwischen sind diese drei Kinder zwischen 6 und 7 Jahre alt. Magdalena und Joseph besuchen die erste Klasse, Anthony ist geistig behindert und geht noch in den Kindergarten. Stefano ist ebenfalls 7. Seine Mutter verliess die Familie, als er noch ein Baby war, sein Vater war mit ihm und den anderen drei Kindern überfordert. Hinzu kommt, dass Stefano und seine älteste Schwester Maria geistig behindert sind. So lebt nun auch Stefano im Krankenhaus und besucht den Kindergarten, Maria ist bis auf weiteres bei einer Pflegemutter untergebracht.
2008 wurde Regina beim Krankenhaus ausgesetzt. Damals war sie ca. 3 Jahre alt. Sie hat Zerebralparese (Spasmus)und vermutlich war ihre Mutter mit ihrer Pflege überfordert. Im Krankenhaus wurde sie liebevoll betreut und bekam Physiotherapie. Leider erhielt ich nun die Nachricht, dass sie am 18.10.2009 verstorben sei.
Diesen Kindern sowie anderen, die ähnliche Schicksale haben, möchte ich in dem St. Nikolaushaus eine Heimat geben. Ihre bisherige Unterbringung ist nur eine mittelfristige Lösung.
Im Januar diesen Jahres war ich für drei Wochen in Tansania und habe das Bistum Bukoba besucht. Bei diesem Besuch hatte ich die Gelegenheit, mit dem Bischof meine Idee für ein Kinderheim für zu besprechen. Der Bischof unterstützt diese Idee sehr. Ohne zu Zögern hat er dem St. Nikolaushaus sofort ein Grundstück kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt.
Ich plane, Mitte Dezember 2009 nach Tansania zurückzukehren und dann mit der weiteren Planung und dem Bau des Kinderheims zu beginnen.

In the following I would like to introduce myself and the St. Nicholas House project.
My name is Stefanie Köster. I am a social worker and at present I live in Essen, Germany.
From July 1999 until November 2007 I lived in Bukoba Catholic Diocese, Tanzania.Together with a religious sister, I helped to start a mission in the Diocese. During my time in Tanzania, I often times met severely neglected and disabled children and I had to learn that there are not many places or homes in Tanzania that take those children in.
I placed several children in the care of a nearby hospital because I could not find any other place for them. Magdalena, Anthony and Joseph were abandoned after their birth and since then they live in the hospital. Those three children are between 6 and 7 years old now. Magdalena and Joseph are in first grade, but Anthony has a mental disability, which is why he still attends kindergarten. Stefano is 7 years old as well. His mother left the family when he was a baby, his father could not handle the task of caring for an infant and for the three older siblings. In addition to that, Stefano and his oldest sister Maria have mental disabilities. Therefore, Stefano too lives at the hospital and attends kindergarten while for Maria we could find a foster mother who takes care of her.
In 2008, Regina was found outside the hospital. At that time, she was about 3 years old. She has cerebral palsy and most likely her mother was overwhelmed by the care she needed. At the hospital Regina was cared for with love, she also received physical therapy and care for her disabilities. Unfortunately, I most recently had to learn that Maria passed away on October 18, 2009.
I would like to give children like Regina, Magdalena, Anthony, Joseph, Maria and Stefano a new home at the St. Nicholas House. The children's placement so far has only been a temporary arrangement.
In January 2009, I visited Bukoba Diocese for about 3 weeks. During this visit I had the opportunity to share with the Bishop my plans for a children's home. The Bishop is very much in support of this idea. He dedicated a large piece of Diocesan property for the free use of the St. Nicholas House. My plan is to return to Tanzania by mid-December 2009 and to start this new endeavor.
